Community Board supports new project ‘Riverside Soundings’
The project's aim is to create an audio portrait of the River Medway and the surrounding environment, within the fund's project area between Sun Pier and the M2 motorway bridge. The project is divided into three elements:
1. A series of free environmental sound recording workshops, led by local sound artist Jane Pitt. During the workshops, participants will learn how to record audio using mobile phones & digital recorders using a variety of microphones to capture the unique soundscape along the river between Sun Pier House, Rochester Riverside and Esplanade.
Sunday 2nd May 10-12:30 Sun Pier (now fully booked)
Friday 7th May 10-12:30 Bath Hard Lane
Sunday 16th May 10-12:30 Rochester Riverside - Common Wharf (now fully booked)
Friday 21st May 10-12:30 Medway Towns Rowing Club
For more information and to find out how to get involved, visit www.msep.org.uk/events.
2. The creation of a sound map, to which the public can add their own recordings.
3. The creation of a sound walk, which will be available free to the public to download and follow or simply enjoy from the comfort of their own homes.
Riverside Soundings will help bring the community together and create a sense of belonging by exploring the project area, thinking about what sounds make up the local soundscape and how this may have changed over the years, as well as by sharing memories. With both the sound map and sound walk, these will create a unique sense of place specific to this particular point in time, that can also be experienced by the wider public (both nationally and internationally) and will be a long-term legacy and valuable outcome of the project.
The Rochester Riverside Community Board was set up to ensure that the benefits of Rochester Riverside, Countryside and Hyde’s £419m regeneration scheme in Medway, are felt across the area, bringing to life worthwhile initiatives and ideas that enhance the local area with an annual budget of £30,000 available for selected community-led projects.
