New public plaza unveiled at Rochester Riverside

Plaza incorporates Travelodge hotel, Co-op, landscaped public realm and apartments

The public plaza at Rochester Riverside, Countryside and Hyde’s £419m regeneration scheme in Medway, has today (17th October) been officially opened, marking a major step-change in the amenities on offer at the 1,400-home regeneration scheme.

Providing a new gateway to Rochester Riverside with an 81-bed Travelodge hotel, Co-op store and new homes, the public plaza was officially opened by Cllr Alan Jarrett, Leader of Medway Council, alongside Andy Fancy, Managing Director, Partnerships South (North and South), Countryside and Guy Slocombe, Chief Investment Officer for Hyde.

The 4,000 sq ft Co-op store will be the first retailer at Rochester Riverside and will move into its premises in November, with an opening anticipated before the end of the year. The convenience of these new amenities will benefit residents in the apartment buildings overlooking the attractive, landscaped plaza as well as families who have moved into the newly completed houses close by. The plaza offers an inviting entrance to the development from Rochester Station, which is just 100 metres away.

This milestone follows the first residents moving into their new homes in June this year and demonstrates the significant progress that has already been made on site. 83 one and two-bedroom apartments and three- and four-bedroom homes have now legally completed following the start of construction in 2018.

Construction continues at pace across the initial first three phases of the development, which comprises 489 homes and the hotel, along with 2,200 sqm of commercial floorspace.

Andy Fancy, Managing Director, Partnerships South (North and South), Countryside, said: “The completion of these first homes, food store and the plaza at such a record rate is testament to the hard work of the team, who are committed to delivering much needed, high quality homes as quickly as possible. We can see our vision of creating an exciting waterside community in Rochester truly coming together. The community has responded really well to our mix of architecture, new homes and the transformation of the site so far, which had lain derelict for a decade.  Over the coming months we will be welcoming more residents and state-of-the-art facilities to the scheme, as well as improving the Medway river walkway further.”

Guy Slocombe, Chief Investment Officer for Hyde, said: “As well as an attractive gateway to the development from Rochester station, this new public plaza provides an early focal point for this emerging Rochester Riverside community. It’s been great to see the first residents make Rochester Riverside their home and we look forward to welcoming more as future phases complete.”

Cllr Alan Jarrett, Leader of Medway Council, said: “Rochester Riverside is not only a valuable addition to Medway’s housing numbers, providing residents with a greater choice of accommodation in an excellent location, but it is also a fine example of a local authority working closely with housing developers to produce a high-quality development. This multi-million pound housing development brings so much to Medway and the local community, and I am delighted the hotel and shop will soon be open for business.

“There is a huge demand for new properties in Medway and we are committed to ensuring Medway residents are provided with a great choice of affordable and luxury new homes. Our monumental regeneration programme is ongoing and also looks to improve Medway’s infrastructure to ensure we continue to provide growth for all and keep Medway a great place to live, work, learn and visit.”

A previously derelict brownfield site, Rochester Riverside will provide 1,400 new homes, as well as a new primary school and retail space when fully complete in 2030. The development will also feature 10 acres of landscaped and green open space such as play areas and parks, whilst the new 2.5 km public riverside walkway will open up a key part of the riverside for the first time.
