Literary project We Live By The River explores Rochester through words and walks
We Live By The River is a new literary project that is being run by Wordsmithery, a Medway-based literary arts organisation, and supported by the Rochester Riverside Community Board.
The project is free and open to all and aims to inspire writers to explore the Rochester Riverside area. We Live By The River is taking place through three strands.
Monthly creative writing walks and workshops
Wordsmithery will lead a monthly walk to explore the Rochester area, which will be followed by a writing workshop, where you will be guided through a series of prompts to respond to the walk. Writing by Barry and the workshop attendees will be uploaded to the We Live By The River website.
Upcoming sessions are being held on the following dates over the next six months, with dates for the rest of 2020 yet to be confirmed:
- 12 February 2020, 2-4pm
- 18 March 2020, 2-4pm
- 15 April 2020, 2-4pm
- 6 May 2020, 2-4pm
- 17 June 2020, 2-4pm
All sessions start at Breaking Bread Rochester, Bellerophon House, Doust Way, Rochester ME1 1FG.
Writer in Residence
Wordsmithery writer-in-residence Barry Fentiman Hall will also visit the Rochester area each month for a year, inviting local people to join him on his walk, and write a poetic response about it. These poems will be available to read on the project website, along with the poems written in the community creative writing classes.
The Confluence Sessions
The Confluence Sessions enable those who are unable to get to a late-night poetry show to enjoy some live literature in a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere. They are held monthly on a Saturday. Visit the Confluence Sessions website for more details.
Wordsmithery aims to inspire wellbeing through creativity, by running spoken word events, literary projects and by publishing a magazine showcasing the best of Kent writing.
The Rochester Riverside Community Board was set up to ensure that the benefits of Rochester Riverside, Countryside and Hyde’s £419m regeneration scheme in Medway, are felt across the area, bringing to life worthwhile initiatives and ideas that enhance the local area with an annual budget of £30,000 available for selected projects.
